Barefoot bagpipers and drummers launch new album

City of Brisbane Pipe Band, a local Brisbane community band, has just launched their second album, Barefoot Through Brisbane.

Named after the band’s signature piping tune and title track, Barefoot includes a broad mix of genres, including folk covers of classic rock songs like ‘House of the Rising Sun’ and traditional Scottish and Celtic favourites – yes, we’ve included every piper’s most dreaded request, ‘Amazing Grace’ – featuring pipes, drums and brass.

Tracks were recorded in various locations around Brisbane City, and mixed and produced locally thanks to a Queensland Gambling Fund grant.

All proceeds from the album’s sale will go towards supporting this local group’s future activities and performances, helping to keep Brisbane’s cultural offerings vibrant and diverse.

The album is dedicated to piping veteran Charles Elliott, who has been an enthusiastic and active band member for more than 45 years. Charlie plays a number of solos and sings on the album, and is the glue that holds the band together.

City of Brisbane Pipe Band is a not-for-profit community group that was formed in 1950, and proudly wears the McNeill of Barra tartan in honour of its founding and long-serving Pipe Major, Ian McNeill. The band plays a number of gigs for the community each year, and is an active part of the local piping community, competing in Grade 4 at competitions up and down Australia’s east coast.

Led by current Pipe Major Peter Hurwood and Drum Sergeant David Spotswood, the band has around 20 active pipers and drummers, and were joined on this CD by guest artists Pipe Major Wayne Kennedy, Sunnybank Brass, and a specially formed ceilidh band featuring jazz vocalist Merinda Dias-Jayasinha.
